Microneedling is one of the best proven methods of changing the quality, elasticity, tone and texture of the skin. The Good Skin Place® uses the Skinpen, which was the first microneedling device to be approved for safety and efficacy by the FDA. Skinpen motorised pen with 14 microneedle delivers 1600 micro needling channels to your skin per second, at minutely controlled depths. Which is a big deal. Why is this?
The microneedle injuries themselves cause a trauma to the skin which sets up a healing reaction – fibroblasts are stimulated to produce collagen. And collagen, as we all know, is the holy grail of improving skin texture and elasticity over time.

BACKGROUND TO MICRONEEDLING
The development of collagen induction therapy, or using needles for cosmetic application can be traced to the early 1990s. A Canadian Dr Andre Camirand noticed that facial scar tissue which had been cosmetically tattooed to blend with surrounding skin started over time to naturally repigment, retexture and reduce the original scar tissue. His experiments with needling led to the creation of a pioneering dermal stamp by South African doctor Des Fernandes. The proven collagen induction which was possible with this needling then paved the way to the development of roller needles, and the Dermaroller.
The mechanical action of the rollers however created an cut across the skin, which can cause unnecessary pain and also tissue disruption that does not lead directly to collagen stimulation.
In 2010 Australian developer Steve Marshall revolutionised skin needling with the engineering of the Dermapen, which as become the gold standard for microneedling, supported by ongoing research into techniques, combination therapies, and active ingredients

THE TREATMENT
There are various needling devices available, at The Good Skin Place® I prefer to use the Skinpen, an FDA approved medically engineered device that is proven to provide less discomfort, with minimal to no downtime. The single use sterile cartridge design is unique in that it is proven to prevent fluid ingress, so there is no risk of contamination between patients.
It produces better results than conventional Dermaroller treatments because the depth of needle penetration can be altered during treatment. This can ensure a completely bespoke treatment plan to minimise discomfort and maximise results around sensitive and not so sensitive areas. Skinpen offers me great precision with treatments. The tip of the pen is small, allowing it to pass closer to the eyes and nose for a more effective treatment in those areas that are of great concern to many. The fast vibration of the Skinpen also helps to reduce discomfort. The needles are proven to stay sharp for up to 80 minutes, allowing for treatment of larger areas if required.
Needling has many terms PCI (percutaneous collagen induction), CIT (Collagen Induction Therapy), SRT (Scar Rejuvenation Therapy) and microneedling.
WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?
A full consultation will determine the best course of treatment for you, this may include combinations of deeper and lighter Skinpen treatments.
Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and (if you choose to) a topical anaesthetic applied and left for 30 minutes. The needling itself is relatively quick, and is carried out using a single-use sterile needle cartridge and following strict guidelines for an aseptic work environment.
Long term results and skin health are achieved by a course of micro-needling treatments, regular advanced clinical facials and accompanied by a preventative, corrective and protective skincare programme.
DOWNTIME
Day 1: Immediately after treatment, you will feel heat, there will be redness and you may have slight puffiness. This varies between people. After an hour or so it calms down and can be likened to deep sunburn. Keep your skin well moisturised with the Skinpen treatment gel provided.
Day 2: A red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Light swelling may be noticeable on waking, but this usually subsides as the day goes on. You will be given a Skinpen recovery product to use
Day 3: Skin may still be slightly pink. The slight swelling has usually subsided.
On subsequent days the skin may feel tight and dry. Use plenty of moisturiser. It is not unusual for the skin to be itchy.
Some people have much less down time than this; downtime depends on the intensity of the treatment, and your skin sensitivity, as well as application of topicals
Your normal skincare programme can be resumed after day 3. Do not introduce the more active products (such as those containing retinoids for a week.
Appropriate skincare will be recommended on the day of your treatment to help accelerate the healing process, protect the skin from the environment and enhance your results.
